Law enforcement agencies are investigating a death by suicide that occurred at the University of California San Diego on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. Authorities reported that an individual jumped to their own death in the early hours of the evening outside the Muir Biology Building, part of John Muir College.
University officials have stated that the victim was not affiliated with the institution. “He was not our student,” said a spokesperson for the university. Out of respect for the deceased and his family, further details regarding the incident remain private at this time.

In a message addressed to the Biological Sciences community, Dean Kit Pogliano expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “Dear members of the Biological Sciences community, I am very saddened to report that a death occurred today outside of the Muir Biology Building. At this time it does not appear that the individual was affiliated with the university. While much of the information related to the incident is not known at present, out of respect to the deceased we are keeping details private at this time,” the dean stated.

Dean Pogliano reassured the campus community that there is no ongoing threat and emphasized the availability of mental health support resources. Students in need are encouraged to access Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), available both in-person and via telehealth. CAPS can be reached at 858-534-3755, and further information is available on their website.

Faculty and staff are also reminded that the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers confidential mental health support and is available at 858-534-5523. The university plans to arrange for CAPS and FSAP representatives to be on site later this week to provide additional support.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The University of California San Diego community is encouraged to support one another during this difficult time and to utilize the mental health resources offered on campus.
